SEC Announces Compliance Outreach Program Regional Seminars

On July 16, the SEC announced the schedule for its upcoming Compliance Outreach Program regional seminars. These programs are open to senior officers of investment advisers and investment companies, including chief compliance officers.

The seminars will discuss industry practices in compliance and ongoing investigations. The program also will provide the opportunity for SEC staff and industry professionals to identify common issues within the industry and share how the compliance professionals have addressed these issues.

Each seminar’s focus has a unique topic. Below is the list of upcoming seminars:

• Chicago – August 28: This seminar will provide an overview of the examination process, including how registrants are selected for examination. Three discussion panels will focus on traded and non-traded real estate investment trusts, investment companies with emphasis on alternative investment funds and money market funds, and current enforcement actions in the investment industry. A breakout session focusing on custody and compliance for small advisers will also be part of this seminar’s agenda. 

• New York – September 13: This program is relevant to mainly newly registered investment advisers, dual registrants and investment advisers affiliated with broker-dealers. The seminar topics include the SEC’s examination process, priorities, risk surveillance, and examination selection process. The SEC staff will also discuss form PF and other filing requirements, examination findings, and policies used by firms to address conflicts of interests.

• Atlanta – September 25: This seminar will highlight the importance of enterprise risk management and effective compliance. The SEC staff will identify key issues noted during examinations such as conflicts of interests, issues related to fees, undisclosed remuneration, and miscalculation. The program will also include the changing demographics of SEC registered investment advisers and the program initiatives to address the change.

San Francisco – November 6: Topics for this seminar includes an overview of the SEC’s examination process and procedures. It will also feature a discussion of OCIE and AMU priorities. The session will emphasize valuation issues, including best practices for valuing assets by private and registered investment funds.

The program is sponsored by the SEC’s Office of Compliance Inspections and Examinations, Division of Investment Management, and Division of Enforcement’s Asset Management Unit.
